Services > Domestic

Government statistics show that 17% of all house fires are caused by electrical faults.

In 2007 this resulted in 49 deaths and 3477 injuries in England and Wales. There were also 2788 injuries caused by electric shocks in homes.
Electrical statistics from ESC booklet 'How safe is your home?'

In the last 20 years modern living have changed dramatically. More and more electrical appliances are being used than 20 years ago, we have more TV's, DVD players, computers, printers, scanners etc. in our homes so you can imagine the demand on your electrical installation has increased hugely and therefore the risk of electrical accidents in the home is far higher than ever before.

Keeping you installation up to date and maintained is the best way to ensure safety for you and others. We strongly recommend you use an electrician that is registered with one of the government approved schemes to carry out any electrical installation work you need doing.

Remember, it is easy to make an electrical circuit work. But it is far harder to make the circuit work safely - an essential requirement in case there is a fault. It is easy to think 'out of sight, out of mind', just because something works does not mean it is safe, do you really know what is going on under your floor boards or in the ceiling?

Here are some points you may wish to consider:

  • Are all the circuits on your distribuition board (fuse box) protected by RCD or RCBO's?
  • Are the downlighers in your property installed correctly and are they fire rated or have firehoods?
  • Do you know if your electrical installation is earth correctly?
  • Are the fittings in you bathroom suitable and in the right zones for your bathroom?
  • Have you plugged in extension lead after extension lead into one socket, is the socket overloaded?
  • Has your installation had a Periodic Inspection & Testing (PIR) report in the last 10 years or change of occupancy

We can help you ask these questions and many more. If your electrical installation, or any part of it, is pre 1970's and has not been inspected within the past 5 years, or post 1970's and has not been inspected in the past 10 years we strongly recommend you have it inspected urgently.

A Periodic Inspection & Testings ( previous known as a PIR) is a health check of your electrical installation and covers the following aspects:

  • The adequacy of earthing and bonding.
  • Suitability of the switchgear and controlgear.
  • For example an old fusebox with a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a haphazard mixture of both will need replacing.
  • Distribution Board (Fuse box) with no RCD or RCBO protections for all circuit may require replacing.
  • Serviceability of switches, sockets and light fittings.
  • The following may all require replacing; older round pin sockets, round light switches, braided flex hanging from ceiling roses to light fittings, black switches and sockets mounted in skirting boards.
  • Type of wiring system and its condition. For example cables coated in black - rubber were phased out in the 1960s, likewise cables coated in lead or fabric are even older and may well need replacing (modern cables use pvc insulation).
  • Provision of residual current devices for sockets that may be used to plug in outdoor electrical equipment.
  • Presence of adequate identification and notices. extent of any wear and tear, damage or other deterioration.
  • Changes in house which have led to, or may lead to, problematic wiring.
